Here is what you need to know if you are thinking of relocating from Singapore to Saudi Arabia.
Singapore to Saudi Arabia: The Similarities
Digital Progress. Both Singapore and Saudi Arabia are nations at the forefront of technological advancement, particularly in areas that streamline everyday life. Saudi airports, much like Changi, are extremely modernised, with highly efficient processes that cultivate a smooth experience in every aspect from customs to baggage handling. Both countries are prolific adopters of mobile payments, including for government services, and have strong paperless initiatives in place.
Coffee Culture. For Singaporeans who love their coffee, they need not worry about finding their caffeine fix after relocating to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi’s have a deep appreciation for coffee and the cities are filled with a wide range of café options. From local brews to international brands, artisanal lattes to traditional Arabic flavours, there are plenty to choose from amongst the vibrant coffee establishments.
Culinary Diversity. Both Singapore and Saudi Arabia share a diversity of flavours when it comes to the culinary scene. In Saudi Arabia, international cuisines abound, with options ranging from Asian to Middle Eastern, Western and beyond. There is also a vibrant street food environment much like Singapore and incoming expats will no doubt love the chance to try the best local dishes like shawarma and kabsa.
Singapore to Saudi Arabia: The Differences
Cultural Adjustments. Understandably there are some key cultural differences to be found between Saudi Arabia and Singapore. It is important to understand and respect that Saudi Arabia is a more conservative leaning country, strongly influenced by Islamic traditions. Though it is much more inclusive than before, residents still need to adhere to customs regarding public behaviour and dress codes.
Public Transport. Singapore’s public transport system is highly efficient, extensive and reliable with a comprehensive network of buses and train lines that make getting around seamless. Often in Singapore, you are only a short walk from a station whether you are in your home or your office. To contrast, Saudi Arabia’s public transport system is in its nascent stage. It is still growing and being tested so the majority of residents rely on cars or taxis for daily commuting and moving around the city. Both Uber and Careem are now operational, but owning or renting a car is usually the more affordable solution long term, especially with the low price of fuel.
Workplace Dynamics. In Singapore, the corporate culture is very face paced and diverse, and you can often find very informal office environments, especially in tech-type companies. Saudi Arabia’s corporate culture tends to be more hierarchical and formal. New arrivals should be aware that decision-making processes can take more time and the emphasis is more on building relationships and trust over time. Also all working hours are reduced during Ramadan, so all residents whether Muslim or not should prepare for a different schedule during the Holy Month.
Climate Shock: Anyone relocating from Singapore’s tropical, humid weather might find the climate in Saudi Arabia a significant change. Saudi has a desert climate with very hot summers from June to August where temperatures can soar above 45°C (113°F). However the cooler months from October to March are hugely enjoyable and the mountainous regions and coastal areas can be very pleasant even during the summer.
Shopping Style: Saudi is home to some truly luxurious malls and a wide range of international brands, but the shopping culture is more influenced by local customs and traditions. Typically, shopping hours in Saudi Arabia are tailored around prayer times, with many outlets closing briefly throughout the day. But the shopping hours are also much longer in Saudi, with malls in Riyadh for example open until midnight on some days, unlike those in Singapore which close around 8 or 9pm.
Cost of Living: Both Singapore and Saudi Arabia offer high standards of living, especially when measured on a global scale, but Singapore is generally more expensive than Saudi. The cost of housing in Singapore is amongst the highest in the world, whereas in Saudi, you can find more affordable options without compromising on quality. For example, a three-bedroom villa in a prime location is likely to be half the price in Saudi than it would be in Singapore.
