More than 37 per cent of work on the nearly 80km first phase of Doha Metro is now complete, a senior Qatar Rail official has said.

“Doha Metro will commence services between the last quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020,” he said at a presentation at Arab Future Cities Summit.

Work on the concrete roof of 17 of the more than 40 stations is progressing. Stressing that 85% of tunnelling work is complete at this stage, the official said 55% of work on the elevated routes of the three lines is also complete. More than 70% of the entire work is taking place underground. The entire tunnelling work of the ongoing phase would be complete by the end of this year.

The first and second phases of Doha Metro would have total of about 100 stations, covering about 215km.

While speaking about the work progress of the 42km Red Line between Lusail and Al Wakrah, which includes 18 stations, the official said the overall progress is close to 37%. More than 32% of the 14km of the elevated section is now complete, he said, adding that the remaining 28km is underground.
