Is There an Exodus of the UK Middle Class Looking to Migrate to the UAE?

3 March 2025

Given the UAE’s reputation for ultra-luxury real estate, endless VIP perks and stable wealth management, it is no wonder that it continues to draw record numbers of UHNWIs and is the world’s top choice for migrating millionaires. But now the UAE is becoming a drawn for those whose bank balance might not be as abundant. According to recent reports, there is something of an exodus amongst the middle class in the UK, with a higher than average demand on how to migrate to the UAE. So what has caused this rise and why are we seeing a shift in this demographic? Why are so many looking into how to migrate to the UAE?

Economic Uncertainty

There does seem to be some common denominators that our consultants are hearing about when discussing UAE relocation with potential UK expats. Prior to the last general election, many of the uber wealthy looked to move to protect larger scale assets, which is one of the reasons so many millionaires arrived on the shores of the UAE. But following further changes such as the planned abolition of non-dom tax status and a reintroduction of VAT on private school fees, those in the middle class are seeing the appeal of a different location. Broader economic uncertainty has many worried about job security, schooling, housing fees and even inheritance tax. They are also increasingly aware of the enhanced potential offered by the UAE, which could see a middle-class household earn between AED180,000–500,000 per year (£39,900–£110,900); a significant rise on the typical UK level of between £35,000 and £70,000 annually (AED158,000 – 315,700).

Stability and Growth

Ultimately many of those migrating to the UAE feel as though it is a more stable and secure landscape for their financial future. It is one of the world’s fastest growing hubs for in-demand industries such as technology and financial services and there is ample employment opportunity in sectors like healthcare, education, real estate and commerce. With the UAE’s unrivalled connectivity and access to emerging markets, investment is rife from around the world and it further underlines the economic security it offers to incoming residents. It also has an enviable tax system, with one of the world’s lowest rates of corporate tax and no income tax, providing further protections that will appeal to a wide range of individuals in different wealth brackets. Its thriving job market and world-class infrastructure are of particular interest to those in the middle class looking to escape the perceived limitations of the UK.

Abu Dhabi Spotlight

One of the trends we are seeing on the rise amongst those in the middle class looking to migrate to the UAE is an increased interest in Abu Dhabi. Though often less publicised than its Dubai counterpart, the capital is an extremely safe, engaging and picturesque destination in its own right. Thanks to growing investments in tourism, construction, infrastructure and business, it is a city on the rise with endless opportunities for individuals to make their mark. As well as offering some superb options in the worlds of culture, art, entertainment and cuisine, Abu Dhabi is also generally considered a more affordable option. This is particularly true in the case of real estate, where incoming UK expats might find their budget stretches a lot further, allowing them to truly indulge when it comes to their choice of home and take a huge step towards that ‘dream life’ they are seeking.
