An Insider Guide to Abu Dhabi Relocation

6 December 2024

In our continued series highlighting the top destinations for relocation across the Middle East, we are taking a deep dive into Abu Dhabi. The vibrant capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is a melting pot of cultures in a modern landscape with a host of world-class venues and attractions including hot spots like the Louvre, the Corniche, the Guggenheim and the F1 track on Yas Island. We spoke to our expert consultant Linda to get her insights on what to expect from your Abu Dhabi relocation journey.

Hi Linda, thank you so much for chatting to us! We know you are long-term resident of Abu Dhabi, so you are certainly an expert. Can you talk us through your responsibilities as a relocation consultant with EER Middle East?

Of course! I have actually lived and worked in Abu Dhabi for 23 years so it is definitely home for me! As a relocation consultant my main job is to ensure that our assignees get a thorough orientation of their new destination. I help with things like touring the city, showing them sample properties in their budget and school searches for those with children.

What does a typical day look like for you?

After collecting the assignee from their hotel, I usually start with a tour, where I can point out key spots like sights, shops, sporting facilities and other places they might be keen to know about. We will also cover schools and communities they want to consider and the various venues and beaches that might be close by to their preferred living areas.

What would you say are the top three benefits about living in Abu Dhabi?

First and foremost, Abu Dhabi is such a safe place to live, it is actually one of the top three safest cities in the world. It is also a fantastically diverse location, with different people from all walks of life. It also has no income tax, which can make a huge difference to budgets!

What are the most unique aspects to the Abu Dhabi relocation process?

All newcomers will have to complete their biometrics, chest x-ray and blood test before getting their visa. They will also need to receive their Emirates ID before they can do certain things like rent a home.

What should assignees know before relocating to Abu Dhabi?

Budgeting can be a challenge when relocating to any new destination, so it is important to be as well prepared as possible. Incoming assignees need to know about their allowances, such as for housing and schooling, as without these the cost of living is significantly higher. The cost of setting up a home can be high overall, especially with connecting utilities, deposits and furniture etc. The evolving housing market has also reduced the availability of rentals, so prices can be on the high side.

What are your favourite things about living in Abu Dhabi?

There really is no place like Abu Dhabi. One of the best things about it is how much entertainment there is, especially during the cooler winter months. We are lucky enough to have lots of concerts from international artists, world-class sports facilities like Surf Abu Dhabi on Hudayriyat Island, the superb cultural district of Saadiyat Island and the endless attractions of Yas Island including SeaWorld, Warner Bros, Yas Marina, Yas Waterworld, the F1 Circuit and CLYMB – the world’s highest climbing wall. The public can even cycle on the F1 track at Yas Island twice a week free of charge!

Are there things that would surprise assignees?

Although Arabic is the official language, everyone speaks English – though picking up a few polite phrases is always appreciated! It is really so safe, you can even leave your car running if you are popping into a store or picking up the kids from school. Though women should dress conservatively when not on the beach, they don’t actually have to cover up completely. Also, it is very hot in the summer, which can definitely be a bit of a shock for some assignees!
