United States approves $194m radar sale to Kuwait

US State Department says deal will improve Kuwait’s internal and external security.

The US State Department has agreed to sell Kuwait $194m worth of radar field systems and related equipment, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency has said.

The deal is aimed at improving the Gulf country’s internal and external security and national sovereignty, reported United Press International (UPI).

It is also meant to help Kuwaiti security forces detect helicopters and airplanes and provide coverage for the country’s northern and eastern borders.

It includes the sale of six short-range radars and one long-range radar with primary and secondary surveillance radar arrays, upgrades to the existing AN/FPS 117 (V) 3 long-range radar, airfield radome, communications systems and identification friend or foe systems.

It also includes support equipment and training, site surveys, installation and checkout, site acceptance testing, interim contractor support, construction and contractor logistics support.

The prime contractor is expected to be Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman or Raytheon.
