18 July 2016

Just 47 firms have been found violating the United Arab Emirate’s midday work break, new figures have revealed.

Workers are not allowed to work during break hours, with firms risking fines and even having their sites shut down.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has recorded 99.8% level of compliance for the midday break by 29,185 firms since the implementation date until mid-July and 47 firms violating the laws.

Some 29,232 inspectional visits have been carried out during the past month, with 16,651 informative visits taking place during the same period.

Maher Al Obed, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspectional Affairs, said: “We carried out 5124 inspectional visits in the Capital, and 3538 visits in Al Ain, Dubai saw 3672 Visits, 4202 visits in Sharjah, 4236 visits in Ajman, 4268 visits in Ras Al Khaimah, 2642 visits in Umm Al Quwain and 1550 inspectional visits in Fujairah.”

He described the level of commitment carried out by the inspectors (18 teams) as superior, noting the decent job they’ve done in recording and photographing violations (for evidence).

Violators can be fine up to Dh5,000 ($1,360) per worker found working during the announced break hours, to a maximum Dh50,000 ($13,600) if the case involved a huge number of workers.
