KUALA LUMPUR: The UAE-based Lulu Hypermarket has opened its first outlet in Malaysia, becoming a gateway for Malaysians to market their products to the Middle East and Asia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the largest retail chain in the Middle East was keen on marketing Malaysia’s fresh and dry produce at its 127 outlets across the Gulf region.
“Villagers can earn extra income by supplying farm produce to Lulu,” he said when opening the outlet at CapSquare on Jalan Munshi here yesterday.
Apart from its outlet in Kuala Lumpur that began its operations yesterday, Lulu is also planning to open more stores in Bangi, Kota Baru, Shah Alam, Johor Baru, Ipoh, Kuala Terengganu, Malacca and Penang.
Lulu Group chairman Yusuff Ali said he would increase investments in Malaysia as he was impressed with the political stability and investor-friendly policies.
“We are also making Malaysia our logistic centre to export products sourced from here.
“We will market produce from Malaysia that even Malaysians are not aware of.
“We are setting up a team to collect fruits and vegetable from villages,” he said.
Yusuff, who has been in the retail business for 40 years, said fresh produce from Malaysia were of high quality.
